10 Most Asked Questions about Asphalt Sealing

The only way we can teach you about the importance of maintaining your driveway and asphalt is by listening to the question you are asking. We have gathered your top 10 most asked questions about asphalt sealing, and we have the answers.

Why is Asphalt Sealing Important?

Getting your asphalt sealed can take your home to the next level (in property value,I mean). Your driveway and pavement are vulnerable to common elements like harsh winters with heavy snow and ice to oil and paint spills from vehicles and DYI projects. Having your asphalt sealed not only brings the original colour back to yourdriveway but protects the soft ground that’s underneath. Water and moisture can build underneath and makes the ground soft. The soft and damp underside puts your driveway at risk of sinking every time you drive your vehicle.

10 of Your Most Asked Questions About Asphalt Sealing

  1. Is it Shiny?
    • When the tar is being sprayed, it does shine. As it dries, a beautiful matte finish appears that will give your asphalt a softness that makes your vehicle pop.
  2. How long will the seal last?
    • A seal should last 3-4 years; however, the more you use your driveway, the quicker it will wear down. We recommend getting your driveway and other asphalt areas sealed every 1-2 years to keep protecting the soft underside.
  3. Will it fill cracks?
    • No. The sealant is a layer that just touches the surfaces. Does that mean you’ll havecracks and holes forever? Absolutely not. If you want us to fill those cracks and holes, we use a mix of rubber and tar that fills. Then we spray the rubber along withthe rest of the driveway, and you can see that hole disappear before your very eyes.
  4. Is it safe for my lawn?
    • Tar does what tar does. It’s not entirely great for your lawn, but our technicians go through 20 hours of training, which includes how to prep and tape off a driveway correctly. Our technicians are currently adhering to the highest customer satisfaction standards, so they know what to tape and what not to spray. However, our technicians are humans, and sometimes they can miss the mark. We have the tools to make it right every time.
  5. How do you remove it from the concrete sidewalk?
    • Like we mentioned earlier, our technicians are human, and sometimes the spray gets away from us (or on the bottom of a shoe depending on whom you ask). Our technicians are equipped with a turtle wax solution that can remove tar from any concrete sidewalk.
  6. Can you put a new seal on an old seal?
    • Yes and no, but let me explain. If you just received a seal on your driveway, another seal or a different type of seal might not dry correctly. Depending on what is mixed in with the tar, some products don’t play nicely together. This mix could result in lines and runoff. The overall look will be affected, and then you’re paying more money to fix it. If it’s been a year or a few years, but the significant indicator is the overall colour. Isthe seal colour fading and worn down? Our technicians can provide a consult to see if you are ready for another seal.
  7. I just got my driveway sealed, but now I see lines, what happened?
    • If you just got your driveway sealed and you’re starting to see lines, it’s okay. There’s no need to panic, depending on how new your driveway is or what was left on it. For example, if you have oil or paint stains, the tar will absorb at different rates. If lines appear, it means there’s a layer of something that’s stopping it from settling evenly. These lines aren’t permanent either. Sometimes it takes a day sometimes
  8. What can I do to make the seal last longer?
    • There a few small things you can do through the year that will help prolong the life of the seal. During the winter, try not to use much salt when de-icing. The salt will break down the seal and fade the colour quicker.
You could also make sure that your eavestroughs are draining correctly. Clogged gutters and downspouts could cause water to pool around the edges and can get underneath any area that was left unsealed.
  9. What kind of weather suits asphalt sealing?
    • We recommend sealing your driveway during the late spring and the summer. For the seal to be adequately absorbed, the asphalt needs to dry and free from any potential rain.
  10. How can I get my driveway sealed?
